Episode 5: It’s all sunk costs

How do musicians afford to do things, such as make music? It’s not a cheap hobby, really.

Because of streaming and torrenting and all that, many musicians these days are upset that they aren’t making money off of recordings. Artists such as Taylor Swift are boycotting Spotify because it doesn’t pay artists enough. (Unless you’re Vulfpeck.) But if you think about it, recorded music in the form that we know it today is a relatively recent phenomenon: before Spotify, mp3s, CDs, cassettes, and records, musicians earned a living by playing their music live.

In this episode, Dan and Tony discuss alternative ways musicians might earn money and how to support artists.
